The Story of St Patrick
Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He is believed to have been born in Britain, and to have died on March 17 (c. 470 A.D.). When he was sixteen, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family's estate. He spent six years in captivity, possibly in County Mayo. Alone and lonely, he turned to religion for solace. This is the time when he became a devout Christian. He escaped his captors by walking 200 miles to the coast, and upon his return to England, he studied for the priesthood. He returned to Ireland as a missionary, and brought Christianity to the island. St. Patrick was the creator of the Celtic Cross. He added a sun to a traditional cross, to appeal to the Irish, as the sun was a powerful symbol in Ireland. As for banishing snakes from Ireland, that appears to be simply legend. According to several sources, there were no snakes in Ireland at the time he lived and worked there. |
